Juanita High School
This school is organized around a courtyard serving as the heart to promote close interaction within this communal space. The commons/cafeteria with built-in tiered seating is adjacent to this courtyard with much transparency for daylight and physical interaction. Inspired by the unique regional geological feature of a "geode", the envelope of the building is organized as such that a hard crust exterior (brick) is uncasing the crystallized (metal and glass) inner core with a cavity (courtyard) in the center. The geode theme also inspired the acoustical pattern of the performing space. All classrooms are organized around flexible adaptable shared learning areas for small group projects.
As a senior project designer of the team, I am responsible for the design of the fenestration of the building envelope, the commons and cafeteria spaces, shared learning spaces and furniture, and the interior of the auditorium.
